Islam, Judaism, and Christianity have all faced challenges due to the development of religious rhetoric that promotes the racialization of individuals, their faith, and culture.
When certain interpretations start to strip away humanity, it can create a negative spotlight on traits that challenge traditional gender norms. This leads to acts of violence against women’s identity, voice, and leadership roles.
This presentation by Dr. Safiyyah El-Amin aims to initiate a discussion on women’s roles in Torah and Shariah law and reflects on how racializing gender roles mirrors the racialization experienced by African American women.
By distinguishing between roles and duties, it calls for a shift from everyday routines to spiritual obligations, denouncing oppressive structures, breathing new life into communities, and nurturing progress.
